Infrared Light Therapy Q&A

What is infrared light therapy?

Many people are familiar with the high-intensity light energy in medical lasers. These lasers use heat to make precise incisions, remove tumors, and vaporize tissues.

Infrared light therapy (cold laser therapy or low-level light therapy (LLLT)) uses low-intensity light energy to produce different results.

Infrared light travels safely through your skin and tissues, going deep below the surface, where the individual cells absorb it. As light enters a cell, it activates cellular metabolism and promotes healing by:

  • Boosting energy
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Increasing circulation
  • Activating new blood vessel growth
  • Stimulating nerve regeneration
  • Supporting your immune system
  • Triggering stem cell activity

Stem cells regenerate the new cells needed to repair injuries and replace damaged tissues.

When would I need infrared light therapy?

At Pure Health Aurora, our team may recommend infrared light therapy to promote healing in many conditions. You could undergo this treatment for any of the following:

  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Tendinitis
  • Joint injuries
  • Neuropathy (injured nerves)
  • Nonhealing wounds
  • Neck and back pain
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Muscle spasms (trigger points)
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Skin conditions (psoriasis, acne, eczema, rosacea, and others)

Infrared light therapy could be a standalone treatment. Your provider might also use it as part of your holistic treatment plan. This therapy complements their other services, including chiropractic care, joint rejuvenation, rehabilitation protocols, injection therapies, and massage.

What happens during infrared light therapy?

At Pure Health Aurora, we have two ways to provide infrared light therapy: via a handheld laser or our Anodyne Light Therapy unit. The handheld laser works at a visible light frequency to a small effected area, typically a bruise or scab. Our Anodyne Light Therapy unit works at a sub-visible frequency. This unit can be applied to larger area from knees, SI joints, or shoulder injuries.

Our providers can answer any questions about this complex and reaserch-driven therapy after learning about your pain, completing an exam, and diagnosing the underlying condition.
